This section is based on the wonderful book “Guide to Streets and Squares of Plovdiv” written by a team of experts from History Museum – Plovdiv: Stefan Shivachev, Alexander Pigev, Atanas Primov, Vera Kisyova, Vidin Soukarev, Maria Karadecheva, Mariana Petrova, Svoboda Zapryanova, Hristo Ivanov and with the participation of Stanko Stoyanov – Nikola Alvadzhiev’s son. His father was one of the greatest collectors of factological and historical data about our city. The book “Guide to Streets and Squares of Plovdiv” has been published with the consent of the Plovdiv Municipal Council dated April 2nd, 2004.
Information from that book is currently published in PlovdivGuide.com site with the special permission of the Director of the History Museum Plovdiv – Mr. Stefan Shivachev.
The initial idea for such a book-guide of streets and squares of our city featuring short informative notes on their names belonged to the great Nikola Alvadzhiev back in the late 1950s. He managed to do the very first survey on the streets of Plovdiv which included 720 streets. In the following decades, the total number of the streets in Plovdiv grew up to 1200, with some of the names having been changed due to intolerance to communist times’ memorabilia.
All historic research on the names of Plovdiv streets has been thoroughly done by the experts of the History Museum – Plovdiv. All administrative information on the location of the streets has been provided by the regional administration offices of the Plovdiv Municipality.
Each of the streets of Plovdiv has its unique history and its unique atmosphere, no matter the season you walk it in… You should try and enjoy such a journey yourselves.
PlovdivGuide.com team has taken their own photos of each of the Plovdiv streets, while the cartographic material is courtesy of www.bgmaps.com .
